Savannah's Closet offers free prom dresses to high schoolers

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WCHS) — A nonprofit in Ravenswood is providing free prom dresses for high school students. Savannah's Closet's "Say Yes to the Prom Dress" event was held by appointment on Saturday, creating a private boutique shopping spree experience, with everything free of charge.

"We're all about restoring dignity to children who have lost a lot in their lives," Jessica Cummings, board member of Savannah's Closet told Eyewitness News.

All prom dresses were new or like-new. Any high school student was welcome to make an appointment, but walk-ins were welcome, too.

"It's just super fun, not only for these ladies but for us involved here at the closet," said Cummings.

Savannah's Closet is a non-profit that gives away free clothes, shoes, books and toys to all ages year-round.

"We want them to be comfortable and free to try on the clothes, look at the clothes and have a good experience," Cummings said.

The organization is completely sustained by fundraisers, grants and private donors. It started when a group recognized the need in foster children in their own community.

"Some of the children that we served through an advocacy organization would carry around their belongings in trash bags," Cummings recalled. "We just saw that there was a really big need."

You don't have to live in Ravenswood, or even Jackson County for your teenager to pick out the prom dress of her dreams for free.

"When you see these ladies come in, try on a dress that looks like it was made for them, big smiles, and we send them out the door with a beautiful gown," Cummings said.

Anyone who missed the prom dress event can contact Savannah's Closet by calling 304-512-9274 or messaging the Facebook page to make arrangements to participate.
